What is AI?

AI, models, agents, prompts, tokens… explained so simply that even a primary school student can understand — with animated pictures. No jargon!

The 6 Big Ideas

1. AI 2. Model 3. Agent 4. Prompt 5. Token 6. Training

1AI — Artificial Intelligence

Think of it like…

AI is like a friendly "electronic brain" living inside a computer. It can't grow up like you do, but it has "read" a huge number of books and pictures — so it learned to do smart things: recognize photos, play chess, answer questions, even write stories.

What it really is

Artificial Intelligence means making computers do things that normally need a human brain — understanding language, seeing what's in a picture, making decisions. It's not a robot you can touch; it's a very clever computer program.

Fun fact: The "A" in AI means Artificial — made by humans. The "I" means Intelligence — being smart.

2Model

Think of it like…

A model is like the "notebook of experience" inside the AI's head. Scientists show the computer millions of examples; the computer writes the patterns down into one giant file. That file is the model. When you ask something new, it looks in its notebook and makes a good guess.

What it really is

A model is the result of machine learning: lots of data goes in, math adjusts millions of numbers inside, and out comes a program that can predict and create. ChatGPT, the face unlock on your parent's phone — all powered by models.

Fun fact: One model file can be hundreds of gigabytes — bigger than a whole library of books!

3Agent

Think of it like…

A normal AI can only talk. An agent is an AI with hands and feet! Give it a task — "help me plan a trip" — and it thinks up the steps by itself, uses tools (search, calendar, apps), checks its work, and retries when it makes a mistake. Like a little helper that actually gets things done.

What it really is

An agent is a program that works in a loop: sense (understand the task) → think (make a plan) → act (use tools) → check the result → repeat until done. That loop is what makes it feel like it has a mind of its own.

Fun fact: "Agent" comes from a word meaning "the one who acts". An agent acts — it doesn't just chat.

4Prompt

Think of it like…

A prompt is what you say to the AI — the dish you order. The clearer your order, the tastier the dish. "Write something" gets you a random meal. "Write a 300-word diary about a puppy" gets exactly what you wanted.

What it really is

A prompt is the instruction you give an AI. Good prompts say: what you want + details + the style. The skill of writing good prompts is called "prompt engineering" — and yes, kids can learn it too!

Fun fact: Try it: add "explain like I'm 8 years old" to any question, and the answer gets much easier to read.

5Token

Think of it like…

The AI can't swallow a whole sentence at once. First it cuts the sentence into small pieces — like cutting it into little cookies. Each piece is called a token. The AI reads cookies, thinks about cookies, and hands you new cookies that join up into its answer.

What it really is

A token is the smallest piece of text an AI model actually processes — one Chinese character is about 1–2 tokens; one English word is 1–3 tokens. AI services often charge by the number of tokens, just like paying by the cookie.

Fun fact: That's why AI chats often have a length limit — the cookie jar isn't infinite!

6Training

Think of it like…

Training is like doing a giant workbook. The AI answers a question, checks the answer key, and every time it's wrong it adjusts itself a tiny bit. After billions of exercises, it becomes amazingly good. That process is called training.

What it really is

During training, the model learns to "predict what comes next" — the next word, the next pixel. Every mistake nudges its inner numbers a little closer to right. Training a big model can take thousands of computers running for months.

Fun fact: After training, a model is "frozen" — it doesn't keep growing on its own. It only changes when it is trained again.

Little Quiz

Answer 3 questions and see if you've become an AI expert!

The AI reads sentences in small pieces. What is each piece called?

Which one can use tools and finish tasks all by itself?

You say "Draw me a cat." What is that sentence called?
